Regulating Global Security: History of an Illusion
Throughout history, with words and with deeds, international lawyers and activists have striven to eliminate war and conflict. Humanity has seen improvements in quality of life over time resulting from advancing knowledge, economic growth, and stronger institutions, among others. These developments have also led to technologies that threaten the existence of future generations. We have long been aware of the dangers of nuclear weapons and climate change to the long-term future of humanity; however, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has shown that we are not prepared to tackle many of the greatest existential threats.

Deconstructing International Law
Hybrid conference, Maastricht University, 7 April 2022
An air of reverence permeates the solemn corridors of the Peace Palace and the halls of the United Nations. International law and its institutions are seen as a force for the greater good in the world, as a bastion of civilisation. In accordance with this picture, international law is seen as being built on a foundation of peace, equality, and justice.
