Call For Papers Asian Law and Economics Association (AsLEA) 2025 Annual Conference

The Asian Law and Economics Association (AsLEA) welcomes submissions for its 2025 Annual Conference on August 13-15, 2025. The conference is organized by the School of Law and Centre for Chinese and Comparative Law (CCCL) at the City University of Hong Kong.
OVERVIEW: In celebration of two decades of fostering collaboration, research, and dialogue at the intersection of law and economics across Asia, the Asian Law and Economics Association (AsLEA) is pleased to announce its 2025 Annual Conference, marking the 20th Anniversary of the Association. This year’s theme "Law, Economics, and Sustainability in Asia" reflects the growing urgency to explore how legal and economic frameworks can foster sustainable development, resilience, and social well-being within the rapidly evolving landscapes of Asian states. This year, we feature a pre-conference Methodology Workshop and an Editors’ Workshops on August 13, 2025. We also introduce the inaugural AsLEA Best Paper Award for Junior Scholars to encourage the next generation of scholars in law and economics.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS (AUGUST 13): In addition to the main conference sessions on August 14-15, there will be a Methodology Workshop and an Editors’ Workshop held in the afternoon of August 13, 2025.
Methodology Workshop (2pm to 3:30pm) In the workshop, Professor Jennifer Arlen, Norma Z. Paige Professor of Law, New York University School of Law, will introduce the fundamentals of experimental economics methods and discuss the latest developments in experimental legal studies.
Editors’ Workshop (4pm to 5:30pm) In the workshop, the editors will share their views on journal submission and give advice on publication strategy. Confirmed editors include:

- Wenming Xu, Editor, International Review of Law and Economics
ASLEA BEST PAPER AWARD FOR JUNIOR SCHOLARS: The purpose of this award is to encourage and recognize outstanding junior law-and-economics scholars. To qualify, the author (and any co-authors) must be current doctoral students or must have completed a PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree) no earlier than six years prior to the Annual Conference submission deadline.
To be considered, a FULL PAPER must be submitted to aslea.2025@cityu.edu.hk by the deadline, and the author(s) must indicate in their submission form that they wish to enter the competition. Award recipients are required to present their papers at the conference. The Organizing Committee will select up to three winners based on the overall quality and contribution of the submitted papers.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
- Format: o Language: English only. o Abstract: 500–800 words. o Full Paper: For those who wish to be considered for the AsLEA Best Paper Award for Junior Scholars, a FULL PAPER is required upon submission. o Content: Empirical and/or theoretical approaches are welcome. Submissions should pertain to any topic at the intersection of law and economics.
- How to Submit: o Please submit your abstracts here: o To be considered for the AsLEA Best Paper Award for Junior Scholars, a FULL PAPER must be submitted by a separate email to aslea.2025@cityu.edu.hk o You may submit up to two submissions for consideration, but each individual can present only once as a primary author at the conference (co-authors may present other accepted papers).
DEADLINES: o Submission deadline: March 31, 2025 (11:59 p.m. HKT). o Decisions will be announced by the end of April. Registration will open in early May. o Registration deadline for paper presenters: June 16, 2025 o Registration deadline for non-presenters: July 31, 2025
Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements as AsLEA and the local organizer are unable to provide stipends or expense reimbursements.
